Peter Schmid-Grendelmeier is Professor for Allergy and Dermatology and acts as the head of the Allergy Unit of the Department of Dermatology of the University Hospital of Zürich from 2003 till 2024.His research focus is on allergic skin diseases, namely atopic dermatitis, mast cell-related diseases, and molecular allergy diagnosis, leading several Phase III, III and investigator-initiated studies in this rea, combining solid clinical work with state of the art experimental research. He has published more than 300 original articles (h-index 82, 34889 citations) and is a member of the Editorial board and/or reviewer for several well-established scientific journals. He is also responsible for the training and residency programs and exams in Dermatology and Allergology at his University.

Among other board memberships such as former president of the Swiss Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunolgy SSAI and vicepresident of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology EAACI  he currently  acts as  treasurer of the International  Society for Atopic Dermatitis ISAD (www.isad.org) and is  member of the Scentific Committee Directorium of Christine Kühne Center for Allergy Research and Education (www.ck-care.ch). Within CK-CARE he co-leads the ProRAD study, a large prospective longitudinal study to investigate the remission phase in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and other allergy-associated diseases such as asthma, food allergies and allergic rhinitis (hay fever), investigating a cohort of more than 1600 patients (NCT04240522).

In addition, he always had a strong interest in tropical allergic skin diseases and skin of color, having worked for several years in Peru (1989) and Tanzania (1997/98).  He is co-leading a multinational research team comparing immunologic signatures comparing cohorts of Atopic dermatitis patients in Tanzania (Moshi) and Switzerland; in Moshi, investigating clinical and immunological signatures between SubSaharan and Swiss cohorts.(NCT05363904). He is also member and newly appointed research head of the Scientific Board of the Regional Dermatology Training center (RDTC). In addition he serves an external consultant of the WHO for Non-communicable skin disease in the tropics and on behalf of ISAD is involved on an WO Onliner course  on “Atopic dermatitis :Training for community health workers in Sub-Saharan Africa”. He is a strong promoter of teledermatology in various countries worldwide, serving also as an expert in a teledermatology service for the “Medecins sans frontiers«.

Besides his mother tongue German he speaks English, French, Spanish , Italian and Kisuaheli . He is married and father of 2 adult  children and likes photgraphy and outdoor sports.
